Introduction to Dry Brush Watercolor: Wildlife & Nature
An Immersive Two-Part Workshop for Beginners
BEGINNER-FRIENDLY
TWO SATURDAYS • 12 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION
ALL MATERIALS INCLUDED
Discover the distinctive art of dry brush watercolor in this immersive two-part workshop led by wildlife artist and instructor Alan R. Young. Designed for beginners, this experience goes far beyond a traditional painting class, giving you the time and personalized instruction needed to build a strong foundation in the medium while creating a detailed wildlife or nature-inspired painting.
Dry brush watercolor uses less water and a less absorbent surface than traditional watercolor, allowing for greater control, rich texture, fine detail, and carefully lifted highlights. Through demonstrations, guided practice, and individual instruction, you’ll learn foundational techniques including layering, texturing, lifting, color control, and “painting by subtraction”—removing pigment to create light, dimension, and realistic detail.
Choose a subject that feels meaningful to you, such as a beloved pet, bird, animal, flower, leaf, or other natural element. Alan will help you translate your reference image into a finished painting while guiding you through each stage of the process. No previous watercolor experience is required. This workshop meets on Saturdays, September 19th and September 26th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each session includes a 30-minute lunch break. Participants should bring their own lunch and a printed reference photo for sketching assistance.
