International Cinema Day: The 113-year History of the Canton Theatre
For 113 years, the Historic Canton Theatre has been a shining icon in Downtown Canton and continues to leave its impact on Arts & Culture in the City to this day. Join us this International Cinema Day as we take a look at the history of this Downtown landmark that has entertained Canton for generations.
The Early Days: Silent Films and “The Bonita” (1911–1920s)
The history of the Canton Theatre dates back to early 1911. During this time, it would show slides and silent movies, which became popular with the public. It quickly became a gathering place for the Canton community, as it introduced many to the magic of film for the first time.
In the 1920s, the Theatre changed owners and was re-named "The Bonita," which would screen movies on Fridays and Saturdays. The Bonita’s popularity grew steadily, setting the stage for the Theatre's first major transformation.
The Rise of “The Haven” and the Talkies (1920s–1930s)
As the excitement around the Theatre continued to grow, it would undergo its first major renovation in the mid-1920s and re-open as “The Haven.” It became known for its cutting-edge technology and for presenting “first-line” shows, including Canton’s first "talking" motion picture, the 1928 hit "The Singing Fool," starring Al Jolson.
This era marked a turning point for the Theatre, as “talkies” revolutionized the film industry and brought larger crowds to The Haven.
The Art Deco Transformation: Canton Theatre Reborn (1940s–1970s)
Decline and Restoration (1970s–2000)
After its renovation in 1940, the Theatre continued to show movies and delight crowds for 30 years. However, by the 1970s, changes in movie-watching habits, including the rise of drive-ins and multiplex cinemas, led to the Theatre’s decline. Audiences found the Theatre outdated and not as convenient as its competitors. Not being able to compete, the Canton Theatre fell into disrepair and eventually closed, sitting vacant for over 20 years.
In 1994, an individual purchased the property, sparking efforts to restore the theatre. As part of a land swap in 1997, the City of Canton finally acquired the building, and restoration work began in earnest. On May 26, 2000, the Canton Theatre officially reopened with its Art Deco style beautifully restored, reclaiming its place as a cultural landmark.
