Cherokee County History Museum & Visitors Center

Located in the heart of Downtown Canton, the Cherokee County History Center features a modern museum that celebrates the county's evolution from prehistoric times to the present day. Housed in a beautifully renovated former police station, the History Center boasts six interactive galleries, a research library, and an archive containing over 100,000 historical items.

Visitors can explore highlights like Native American artifacts, a vintage wagon from the 1890s, and a race car simulator that puts you in the driver's seat at Dixie Speedway. The museum also features countless interactive exhibits and touchscreens throughout, making it an engaging and hands-on experience for all ages. Outside the building, three sculptures by artist Huelani Mei Fogelman represent pivotal aspects of Cherokee County’s heritage, including its indigenous peoples and agricultural roots.

In addition to the museum's permanent displays, be sure to check out their rotating temporary exhibits throughout the year! Until the end of February, visitors can can discover A Century of Toys - a special collection of toys that shaped the childhoods of generations of Cherokee County residents. You will also want to keep an eye on the History Center's events calendar, as it is constantly being updated with must-attend events that embrace Cherokee County's roots.

That's why the History Cherokee building also doubles up as a Visitors Center where you can get free information on all things Cherokee County. Funk Heritage Center

Another must-visit for history-buffs is the Funk Heritage Center, located just a short drive from Downtown Canton on the campus of Reinhardt University. Recognized as Georgia’s Official Frontier and Southeastern Indian Interpretive Center, this museum provides a deep dive into the lives of the Southeastern Indians and early Appalachian settlers.

Begin your visit with a 15-minute film about the Cherokee Natives before exploring the Hall of Ancients, where dioramas and artifacts chronicle 12,000 years of Native American life. Other highlights include the Buffington Gallery’s exhibit on the Trail of Tears, a display of contemporary Native American art, and the one-of-a-kind Sellars Gallery of Historic Hand Tools. Outdoor trails lead to the Appalachian Settlement, featuring historic log cabins that offer a glimpse into 19th-century life.

The Funk Heritage Center’s gift shop is a treasure trove of unique items, and its picnic-friendly grounds make it a perfect spot for a family outing.
